Hotel Cleaners Open Door to 3 Feet of Trash — Toilet Paper Piled Higher Than the Toilet, Room Needs Full Renovation

The ‘worst hotel guest ever’ checked out of a property in China and left the room in such bad condition that it needed to be renovated.

On December 12, a long-staying guest left the Yunshang E‑sports Hotel at Silicon Valley Street and Heyuan Road in Changchun, Jilin Province. A cleaner entered to refresh and turn over the room, and was shocked by the condition it was left in.

Staff found that trash had piled over 3 feet high with bottles, food packaging, takeaway boxes, and general refuse. The bathroom floor was covered in grime, toilet paper and tissue was piled higher than the toilet, and the area emitted a pungent and nauseating odor.

The hotel posted a “cleanup” video, saying it took them three days just to discard everything and disinfect. Even after cleaning, the room reportedly had damage and requires renovation before they can make it available to another guest. Baseboards and the headboard need replacement.

The guest was described as a long-term occupant – living on-property for perhaps two years – who rarely went out. One staffer said they’d worked at the hotel for over a year and never saw the guest. Reporting suggests the guest had explicitly asked staff not to disturb them (no housekeeping entry). Daily housekeeping is important!

Apparently the customer still owed $383 in daily room rate charges, which was over 10 days in arrears, entirely apart from excess cleaning costs. With room rates starting at $28 per night at this property, though this guest paying recently $38, the bill for a two year stay would have been $20,000 – $30,000.

The hotel reports being in communication with the guest about it. According to the hotel’s manager, police were not involved and they don’t plan to escalate through the courts.
