American Squawked 7700 Over Cuba — Miami–Quito Flight Went Into “Lockdown” and U-Turned

American Airlines flight 2259 from Miami to Quito, Ecaudor took a U-Turn over Cuba on Saturday night, landing back in South Florida about 74 minutes with a combative suicidal passenger on board who had to be “held down by at least four people.”

The pilots squawked 7700, declaring an emergency. The Boeing 737 MAX flight was described on board as being in ‘lockdown’ due to the violent passenger, with a level 4 disturbance declared. Once back on the ground, the plane’s brakes were inspected before it was allowed to taxi back to the terminal, since the aircraft would have landed overweight with much of the fuel for the flight still on board.

I will never understand humanity, though I do understand how all kinds of human experience winds up on an airplane. On an American flight in the fall a passenger tried to kill her dad with rat poison, attacked a flight attendant and wound up duct-taped to their seat. Here’s another American passenger duct taped and gagged after trying to flee the aircraft while it was inflight.
